Blessed are...

I was reminded of something today when thinking back on the harder times in my life. I realized that a commonality in all those times was God was SO present to me. In grade 12, I learned so much about God and his forgiveness and grace and I was overwhelmed. In first year of university I had a rough year. I'm not sure how it is for everyone in their first year of university but I wound up feeling more alone and abandoned than I ever had in my life and it made me run, wholeheartedly into Gods open arms. I learned where my dependence needed to lie, and who built me up. God blessed me incredibly in that year, even though it was one of the most personally difficult ones of my life.

All this thought of blessing in hard times reminded me of some of the beatitudes. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." (Matthew 5:3&4) It's really true that these are who are blessed. When you are mourning or feeling down, or "poor in spirit" perhaps, these are the times when we really desire to be near to God and be persist to be near to Him. These are the times that He wraps His arms around us and pulls us close, comforting us and reminding us of His great love and promise. We notice God's presence because we need it so much more. We're lost, broken and hurting and we know that only one who can truly comfort us, give us joy and hope is our heavenly Father.

Cause He knows the hairs on our head. Our comings and goings. He knows our hearts. Who would be better at comforting us? No one, He knows us best.

So, as much as it totally stinks to be in a low spot it's SUCH a blessing to be there. It's a blessing to be poor in spirit and mourning because then we are near to the Almighty God, the Creator of the universe! This idea probably sounds contradictory, to be blessed because we are mourning, but maybe only because we've accepted the ways of the world.

I'm currently working on something I hope to post up here in a little while. But it really has to do with this idea of being in God's presence and the joy that we often feel when we are truly there. We'll see if it ends up on here. :)

Blessings

A Letter Reflecting on Unity

Dear brothers and sisters, I implore us to seek unity with one another, just as John encouraged us to do through his letters to the early church. Let us not be pulled apart by disagreements that lead to hate and division. Can we show the world what it looks like to disagree with love? Can we show what it looks like to have differences but be united because we have something so incredible connecting us that we can’t be pulled apart? We all have this one major, amazing, life changing thing in common, not only with each other in the church but with those outside the church. We are loved by God, who provides and cares for us so deeply. Within the church we recognize the need we have for God, not only for salvation but for true and abiding hope, for unshakable peace and unspeakable joy. We know as a church family that the only reason we can stand before a loving, perfect, Holy God is because Christ stands besides us and reminds God that we have been pardoned because of His sacrifice. ...

Day 6- Passages that have Impacted/Encouraged Me

I have to try really hard not to begin these posts with "so". Apparently, that is my go to starter word...which is odd but true. I skipped yesterday due to the cold that was taking each member of our house captive one by one. Why is it never all at once? Sometimes this feels it would be easier than this long, drawn out affair we have been experiencing. Our youngest has had a fever for the past two days and while at first she handled it like a champ she, like all of us, only had so much to give before she just decided the whole being sick things sucks and is now over it. Anyway, I skipped yesterday and considered skipping today as well but then I felt like I wasn't really challenging myself then. So this might be another lighter post but the point was for me to write every day not write something groundbreaking every day (or ever!). So, when I looked at my list of things one that stuck out to me was Bible verses that have impacted me. I think that even if you aren't a...

Day 3- Vulnerable Parenting

This post is being written much later than I would like but it will have to do...I know I'll be able to get it done in time to post and that's really what I'm aiming for. I had been looking through my list of blog topics and having a hard time with one that I felt I connected with and could easily write about in a shorter time frame.  As I looked through the list with my sleeping daughter laying heavily on my arm I realized the one that was probably most appropriate for my day and the one that would challenge me to really be vulnerable and open...and that's vulnerable parenting.  This idea has two pieces to me...how am I a vulnerable parent to my children and how am I a vulnerable about my parenting or my experience parenting with other people.  Today...this week...okay the last three months in particular have been a bit rough in the parenting department. With my eldest back at school my middle one lost his best friend and playmate. That paired with a kid who really...
